The Tarot 9's in Love

Top Row: The Incidental Tarot
Bottom Row: Ramses – Tarot of Eternity

The number 9 relates to completion, fruition, integrity, idealism, the unseen realms, life review, wisdom, crystallisation, transition, the Third Eye, visionary leadership and protection.

The Tarot 9’s are a bit like the 7’s in that they often indicate solitude rather than companionship. This is by virtue of resonating with the Major Arcana Hermit energies.  Energetically, there is a strong resonance with the Third Eye.

9 of Wands. Like the 4 of Pentacles, this is a card of boundaries. Often it indicates a need to draw new boundaries after betrayals and other harsh life lessons. Depending on the spirit with which these lessons are greeted, the person represented by this card can either choose to display sound boundaries or become jaded and cynical which then leads to isolation and an unwillingness to share oneself with others.

To the relationship, the 9 of Wands can be a card of great passion if well-dignified. It can mean that you have learned to respect each other’s differences and that you have reached a level of immunity against petty arguments. You are able to see the other person’s true nature and intentions and simply have no need to sweat the small stuff any more.

On the other hand, if ill-dignified, the 9 of Wands could mean that one or both of you are constantly walking on eggshells around the other.  There could be a tendency to take everything personally and lash out.

Sexually, and of course going back to the upright or well-dignified card meaning, this can be a card of great passion and transcendence in the sexual experience. The kundalini life force is channelled to cause a third eye explosion during the climax.

To a single person, this is not usually a card of hooking up with another person (depending a bit on surrounding cards of course) but could be seen more as an indication to take stock of the past and make sure that lessons are integrated without cynicism as a byproduct.

If the lessons are integrated successfully, there is great strength and visionary ability with this card and it is not likely that the Seeker will settle for anything less than they deserve next time.

9 of Swords. A card of worry, anxiety and despair. This is what I like to call ‘the card of the looping mind.’  The mind starts to loop when we are unwilling or unable to face our own shadow and instead choose to blame others and outer circumstance for our problems.

That’s not to say that outer circumstances never play a role in our lives – of course they do. However, the 9 of Swords type person often fails to take action because of indecision and self-doubt. Nothing is done about the situation as they feel completely disempowered to move on.

This card is a bad sign for the relationship. One or both of you could be so terribly afflicted by negative thoughts, doubts and mistrust that building anything sound or solid is virtually impossible. The negativity has to be transformed before positive growth is possible.

Whether the 9 of Swords is well- or ill-dignified, negativity is the main problem, but if ill-dignified, danger could also be implied. There could be a real need to remove oneself from an abusive situation that could otherwise end very badly indeed.

Any physical intimacy that takes place under the sign of this card is likely to be categorised as ‘use and abuse.’  There is no meeting of hearts and one yields to the other out of obligation and fear… Sometimes out of fear of losing the other person and sometimes out of fear of being abused.

However, as this is mostly a card of negative thought energy, physical intimacy has to be implied by surrounding cards for this element to be present at all.

As the anxiety factor is high with this card, some sort of need for professional counselling is often indicated.

9 of Cups. A card of great emotional contentment. This card indicates an ability to appreciate the little things in life – a trait which instantly leads to increased happiness.

The 9 of Cups is together with The Star one of the two ‘wish cards’ in the Tarot. You instantly get a feeling that your wish will come true when it shows up in any type of reading, so obviously if it shows up in a reading about love and relationships, it usually indicates that things will go your way… And if they don’t exactly go your way, something much better will be just around the corner.

Ill-dignified it usually means an inability to appreciate life in general. Moodiness, crabbiness and intolerance could be indicated. Other people are seen more as a cause of trouble than a source of joy.

In a single person’s reading, the 9 of Cups indicates their wish for new love coming true. Check surrounding cards for the Ace, 2 and 3 of Cups as well as The Lovers, the Knight of Cups or any court cards which could signify a new lover.

If the card shows up ill-dignified or reversed in a single person’s reading, it usually means a need to learn greater self-love and appreciation for life. A good way would be to start practicing gratitude and to start giving more from the heart with no other intention than the joy of giving. Once this lesson is mastered, you will have become a virtual magnet for love.

Sexually, this card indicates a deep emotional merging. Your higher hearts are open and unconditional love flows unhindered (upright and well-dignified).

If ill-dignified, sex will be more about getting than being in the flow of giving and receiving. There will be an unspoken expectation of not getting one’s needs met.

9 of Pentacles. This is a card of success and achievement in the material realm. It may indicate that you are quite happy in your own skin and actually better off on your own than paired up.

I have often seen this card show up in a love reading as indicating that the object of desire (typically a woman) feels out of reach to the Seeker or that the Seeker is an object out of reach to an admirer. This is a bit of a red flag to me as the one doing the admiring sometimes tries to pull the other person down rather than build himself up.

When this card shows up in a reading for a couple, it usually indicates that one or both of you need more space and the focus may be more on work or creative projects than on the relationship.  This is not a problem if you already have a firm foundation and empathy with each other.

Reversed or ill-dignified.  Unmet physical needs could be indicated. I also see this reversal as relating to STI’s/STD’s contracted due to unfaithfulness – especially together with one of the Scorpio energy cards (Death, Knight of Cups and the 5-7 of Cups).

Good post, and a synchronicity, as I was just doing a reading for someone where two of the 9s turned up. It’s given me food for thought.

Thanks James, I’m going to assume that you mean well-dignified 9 of Wands. :) I hope my PM wasn’t too ill-timed or otherwise offensive…? Or perhaps it failed to reach you?

A very dignified 9 of wands, of course! And thank you for your message yesterday… it left me with a very uplifting, light energy… and for some reason you’ve come through really strong in this morning’s meditation. It’s interesting how people connect, isn’t it?

Hi Lisa! Over the pst two months, I have been “energetically” (i.e no physical touching) having a romantic soulmate connection in my neighborhood with a man ten years younger than me. I have done your relationship spread and ultimately the magic door to understand our relationship now because I know we have past life issues to resolve obviously. His lesson to learn in this incarnation is ALWAYS ace of cups in relation to me but I need some guidence interpreting the magic door.
I am currently in a relationship with someone else. I would discontinue my relationship if I truly knew he will embrace the ace of cups.
    4. 4 Swords reversed (I’m currently trying to be objective/meditative about my feelings. Prudence)
    5. Nine of Cups (common theme for us) and have even gotten it in a spread with The Star together.
6 Heirophant rx ( my current relationship status)
    7. 8 of Wands rx ( this card came up as his current status in our incarnation together only well dignified.
    9. Justice
    10. Empress rx

I feel like this isn’t the time to pursue but should I even be considering a relationship with him at all? I’m new to tarot and would love a second opinion. Thank you for such a wonderful site!!

Hi Gina, thank you for commenting – glad you enjoy the site! You’re right – now is not the time. The two marriage cards (Hierophant Rx and Justice) in a reading with The Empress Rx suggests that a union started while still involved with another will not be blessed.

The 4 of Swords is card of relationship harmony (Jupiter in Libra). Justice/Libra is ruled by The Empress and since The Empress is reversed in the final row, you cannot expect a good outcome if you act on this.

The 9 of Cups is there to remind you to be careful what you wish for if you are hiding the truth from your partner. What goes around comes around in form of Justice in the bottom row.

Thanks for bringing this up so that I get a chance to show that a Swords card in position 4 doesn’t always mean ‘take action’ – You were clever enough to realise that the 4 of Swords is a card of non action. Well done!

    Hi Lisa,

First of all, I love your page! It always provides great insight and approaches for interpretation of the cards. You’re amazing :)

There’s someone I’m really interested in getting to know and developing a relationship with, but the thing is though, he is a friend’s coworker, and essentially not much more than a stranger at this point. We’ve been introduced and that’s it. I did a reading asking the question of how I can develop a relationship with him, and the reversed nine of cups was drawn as the best thing I can do right now.

    1. 2 of cups (situation or problem)
    2. Hanged man (how I can overcome the situation)
    3. Rx 9 of cups (best thing I can do)
    4. The fool (his side of things)
    5. 3 of wands (where)
    6. Hermit (when)
    7. Rx. Strength (lesson to be learned)

I feel like the cards are telling me to just let things be and let it flow in its own course. And in terms of the 9 of cups, i feel like it’s a reminder for me to not dwell on relationships too much right now, and to just focus on my own appreciation of my life, and to learn to accept myself and allow myself to bloom. Would that be a fair interpretation?

      Thanks San Chan! :)

Yes, I would say that is a fair interpretation. The Hanged Man also suggests the need for a new perspective before you can take any action. There may be something you need to learn first. The timing would be during the month of Virgo (Hermit) so the summer is better used for finding happiness within. Blessings,
